In a bygone era, most doors had those big locks, (Skeleton keys maybe?) where people would spy through the hole. I think there has been maybe...9 billion stories, books and movies that had that element in them. There's something about being close enough to hear, to hear moans, groans and bodies slapping, maybe catch a scent, but not really being able to see that is extra titillating.
