Seriously, these people and their view of "morals" and lack of knowledge of the very religious texts they claim to love, are so frustrating. Morals? The Golden Rule, in part. You know, the idea that dates to early Confucian times (551–479 BCE), which Christians then plagarized. The same way they plagarized so many things, Parthenogenesis (Virgin birth) which had been around 1000s of year prior to the time of Jesus, (Isis and Horus for example), Yuletide details, stolen from the Druids, the Three Wise Men, stolen from multiple stories, relgions and cultures that predate the time of Jesus. Using hermeneutics, allegorical and anagogical aspects when reading ancient religious texts, plus factoring in science, archeology and facts, is edifying. :)

I consider myself a Christian; but perhaps a poor one at that…don’t really know the Bible that well….and do not view it as the word of God…but just a lot of wise words about life and people living together peacefully and together for the benefit of everyone. I found your lesson very interesting about how so many of the mores and tenets came from older societies and civilizations. I guess it makes little difference to me knowing that. The advice is good in so many cases. I was 14 when I first learned of the Golden Rule….was unaware it was in the Bible until I was 21. I still try to guide my life this way. Don't always make it happen.
I do believe that folks believing in the wisdom of the tenets and mores, helped us evolve as a society…and as religion has become less important in society…or attention to at least the mores and tenets, I do believe society is worse for the situation....leading to folks intolerance of one another…and the lack of rails or guidelines that help people stay within the bounds of a civil societal relationship. I do believe the deterioration of the attention to religion is at least part of the puzzle of the root cause of the crime and shootings we are experiencing in this day and age. Respect for one another has certainly deteriorated over the past 20-30 years.
Regardless of the origin I do believe that much of the advice is good, reasonable and solid.
Personally I believe the lack of appreciation for one another as good and caring people, regardless of our perspective on abortion, immigration, taxes, welfare, economy, politics, or whatever has contributed to the dumbing down of America and the new insensitivity regarding the worth and value of human life…just MHO….
And no I do not believe it is right for anyone to push their religious ideas on other people….it is a personal, private thing…and should be respected and treated that way..

ReplyDeleteReligion? The bible is a "library" of sorts, where people can select the good, or the bad. Interpretation of the text is up to the individual. People can use religion to enslave mankind, or to set us free. People can use religion to uplift, or to oppress. I have no problem with those that are "Beatitude" fans and try to emulate that, and I have major problems with those that use the dark and ugly "sermons" to try to dominate or oppress others. And I would point out that there are cultures that have no affinity or connection to any religion that are egalitarian and treat others fantastically. My point being, people can be good or bad, irrespective of religion. I just dislike how so many people in the USA use religion to persecute others, rather than using it to help others...if that makes sense. Anyway, thank you for the message. :)

I know this is kind of a personal question…but respectfully might I request you share a little bit about what attracted to you to explore and discover so much about ancient history and their civilization.
DeleteI suppose my interest in those topics is just based on a fascination of human beings, history, cultures and anything that has helped shape what our world is today. Obviously, regardless of ones stance on religion, the Torah, Koran and Bible have had massive influence on society, good and/or bad. Dating, marriage, reproduction, laws, courts, wars, education, or lack of, human rights, human sacrifice, oppression, medicine and on and on have been formed in part by religion.
DeleteSo from there, my curiosity and questions went to older religions, what influence they had on the three primary monotheistic religions of roughly 2000 years ago. Prior to that, most people were polytheistic, so that change and how it came about is interesting to me. In many older religions, and in many current ones still practiced today, women were revered, were Goddesses, it's interesting to me how they were removed from the "churches" and the power structures, and in some cases sort of whitewashed out of mainstream history, which most people are not aware of. So, no real reason really behind any of this, I just love learning and want to know about the world around me. :)
