Churches and religious organizations are generally exempt from income tax and receive other favorable treatment under the tax law...provided they stick to religion, and not engage in politics. For several decades our religious fruitcakes have been increasingly ignoring this law, and using their base and buildings to advocate for political candidates, changes to laws and rules, for fundraising, and to generally try to turn the USA into...a fucking theocracy. So while laws demanding separation between chuch and state are clear...what's actually happening is:
Lunatic religious fundamentalists conspiring to overthrow fair elections...from their churches.
Lunatic religious fundamentalists conspiring to overturn Roe v Wade...from their churches.
Lunatic religious fundamentalists conspiring to undo gay rights, to reverse rulings on gay marriage...from their churches.
Lunatic religious fundamentalists conspiring to overturn the 1st Amendment regarding pornography...from their churches.
Lunatic religious fundamentalists conspiring to overturn Lawrence v Texas, (Sodomy Laws) that regulate the ownership and use of dildos, engaging in oral and/or anal sex, BDSM, and a plethora of other private acts that consenting adults engage in...from their churches.
Speaking of the 1st Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The "clue" is in the first line. The first line, of the first sentence, of the first amendment. Meaning...keep your retarded bronze age fictional religious laws...out of our courtrooms, out of our schoolrooms, out of our libraries, out of our doctors offices and out of our bedrooms.
There is a legal term known as "stare decisis". It basically means legal precedent requires existing law remain in place in the absence of new evidence. In the case of Roe v Wade, there is no new contravening evidence, meaning this reversal is based on the religious views of 5 of the Supreme Court Justices and not on anything else.

All of this with abortion and so called "Christians" got me curious about what, if anything, the bible says on the topic and interestingly enough...the only time abortion is mentioned is when God himself provides full blown instructions describing in great detail exactly how to perform them. The overwhemling majority of Christians don't know the first fucking thing about the Bible, they just want to control all aspects of your sex life, just like the Taliban.
Nope...not really. Would I care if it was? Nope...not one single bit. :)
While the six passages that address same-sex eroticism in the ancient world are negative about the practices they mention, there is no evidence that these in any way speak to same-sex relationships of love and mutuality.

DeleteAs usual, so many great things posted here by Vanessa. Totally agree on the churches. We have a big problem in our region with religious organizations buying large tracts of land for summer camps and having them removed from taxed status. As our property taxes increase that really burns me.

If the churches just did their charity and soul saving thing, I have no problem with them. When they pay no taxes and influence public policy, now it's an issue. And as you said, your property taxes increases...that's not fair.

DeleteWith all due respect I disagree with your interpretation of the religious clause in the Constitution,....,it simply means that Congress shall not establish any officially recognized religion....it came because of the Church of England back then 1776 was the official state religion of England.....it was created by the King because the Catholic Church did not allow divorce and remarriage...it started the lack of religious freedom...you had to belong to the Church of England if you lived in England....the amendment doesn’t mean in all cases that religious expression cannot be out in the open......although many people believe that to be true...that religious expression cannot be anywhere public...it can be in many places that are not part of the government....
ReplyDeleteI am not a Woman...so I don’t pretend to even partially understand about feelings about abortion....I don’t know myself how I feel....I believe strongly in individual freedom....and the privacy of a Woman....but I believe abortion takes a life......but I also do not believe society has the right to interfere....so I do believe bottom line it is an individual decision and Women should have that right.
If the SCOTUS draft holds true in the end, it does not mean an end to abortion...,it simply means the laws will be made by each state.....the blue states have already made it easier...New York, Connecticut to name a few......and that will stand....some of the red states have made it more restrictive...and that will stand as well.....And Congress can always create a law...and that would become the law of the land...and that will happen I believe...at some point.

This is a tough issue...and there is great sincerity on both sides....I really don’t view that religion is a driving force behind many pro life people.....it is difficult and I regret the violence, the hatred we have for one another because of this single issue...rather than sitting down and working together to understand and find a reasonable way...
What I contend regarding the 1st Amendment and religion, is what you said, and what I'm saying. Congress can make no laws regarding religion, pro or con. SCOTUS, not being a part of Congress, but being one of the 3 parts of the branches of government, should not be allowing their religious views to hold sway over a ruling that affects the entire nation. Back to stare decisis and the fact that existing law has been in place regarding this for nearly 50 years, their desire to overturn this ruling should be based on some sort of new evidence, for which there is none. So, knowing the religious idealogy of SCOTUS as a whole, and Alito especially, who is the author of this draft, what we really have is their twisting and turning in the wind to make up nonsense to reverse it, and those points hold no "water" legally, so it comes down to, it's against his/their religion. This is no good. This is what some "courts" say in Islamic Fundamentalist nations, where their religious interpretation of the Koran decides law...in other words, Sharia Law.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion on abortion is that I am very much prolife, but do not think it's any of the governments business. I wish every pregnancy was planned for, wanted and desired, and would come to a healthy term birth. So to that end, I am very, very, very much prolife. The part of me that believes in small government, autonomy, privacy, free will and so on, thinks, again, it's none of the governments business what we human beings do with our own bodies. And yes, abortion is killing a child. So for me, it's all cut and dried. Yes, it is ending a human life, yes, I am prolife, no, it's not any one elses business. So simple...but yet complicated. So we appear to agree...with the exception that I believe the right uses religion as a "reason" for being "prolife" mostly because they never, ever, ever, fucking shut up about it. :)
Thank you for your thoughtful response and clarification.....and I concur on your point about religion....most of the mores' and values in our society come from the Judeo-Christian background and teachings.....and killing is taught to be wrong...and the Christian faith encourages reaching out to others..so yes vocal opposition...and more from both sides by the radicals....and as on most subjects in our country the leaders do all the talking...while the followers sit quietly with their own thoughts....I defintiely believe this to be true in the political parties.....I believe that the leaders of both parties on the federal level do not reflect most of the "small" people throughout America....and those leaders and the media blowing things up and continually reporting on them....often without a basis for doing so, divide our country more. Most of us, black, white, brown, yellow, rich, poor, republican, independent, libertarian, democrat, are much more alike in our thinking and who we are.....than the media portrays.......we just want competent and accountable leadership.....now lacking equally on both sides. Give me the next 535 people I meet to replace all the folks in Congress and we would be much better off.
ReplyDelete"stare decisis" can be over turned....it has more than a few times...over the course of history and more frequently in the last 50-60 years......And in essence your comment about why it would be overturned is true......and in support of that... not my words, but from an article..."For most of its history the court changed its mind only when it thought past precedent was unworkable or no longer viable, perhaps eroded by its subsequent opinions or by changing social conditions."
From my vantage point there is little changed, except we have learned more about the pain a fetus can endure....and how many weeks it takes to be possible to still live.....outside the womb....not saying that should change things....
And I personally do not believe this should be a political issue...or a decision made one way or another to overturn Roe vs Wade....I would guess that the majority of Americans have no idea what the Case ruling said or why. Our media is so poor...these days....instead of informing....creating opinion...
Of course the answer is birth control...but hey we are after all human.....but there have been far fewer abortions in the country today as opposed to 20 years ago or in the 1980's at the peak.
