These apparently have been floating around since the CB-3000/Curve days.
When we were looking into adding one of these to our lifestyle I remember reading warnings from them. They were citing bootleg devices and warning that they would have sharp edges and cut you. They added serial numbers to the packaging, etc. to combat it.
I would guess if they didn't charge $150 for $3 worth of plastic there wouldn't be such an open market for that.

I've been seeing where more and more people are making their own from home on a 3-D printer. Quite interesting really.
