*Musing and ramblings based on watching my fellow Americans, via state run TV.* :)
Most Bible Humping (yep, I said humping) American "Christians" don't seem to know:
Many of our founding fathers were Deists...not Christians.
The Jesus they follow was a short, swarthy, Jewish guy, not a well groomed Viking.
Jesus name is derived from the Latin word Iesus. The Greek version is a rendering of the Hebrew word Yeshua, a variant of Yehoshua, in English, "Joshua", meaning "Yah saves".
The Bible was never meant to be inerrant, it can only be read properly using hermeneutics, and factoring the anagogical and allegorical aspects of the time and texts.
The concept of "Original Sin" had nothing to do with Jesus or anyone from his era, but rather from Agustine of Hippo, who lived about 400 years after the time of Jesus.
All of the "miracles" outlined in the Bible were plagiarized stories from previous eras and religions. Virgin birth, (parthenogenesis) from Isis and Horus for example, certain acts of "worship" or practices from the Druids (Yule log) and so on.
Gays and lesbians, gender fluid people, whatever titles one may use, were commonly known and accepted in various times throughout history and in numerous cultures.
"In God We Trust" became the USA motto in the 1950's, not at the time of founding.
The first line of the 1st Amendment is there for a reason...our Founding Fathers did *not* want the USA to be a theocracy.
I would point out however, that while religion has done huge damage to the free will of the human spirit, casual and free sex was not in abundance the way some people might wish, hope or think in the "old days". Economic hardships, pregnancy, rape, poverty, disease, death of mother and child at childbirth, there were a myriad of factors that contributed to our keeping our legs closed, not just based on shame or religious guilt. Birth control, education, advances in medicine, the ability to have proper hygiene, certain laws, and a plethora of other things helped bring about the sexual revolution and autonomy for us.
That some people, meaning patriarchal loving dotards, detest losing further control isn't really a surprise...they view it as survival of their whole way of life and ideology. Because they view hardship, misery, suffering as entre to "Heaven", because the view hedonism or pleasure as sin, because they view the objective of fucking as being for philoprogenitive purposes, because they don't read, they know little about their own religion, laws, origin, civics, Constitution, and just about everything else, we live in MAGA 'Murica, home of the semi-free and the artificially brave.
I have insomnia.
And...I'm not wearing pants. :)
